Art

Come to the Art Grove to create, build, and dream. Laura and Leanne will be teaching Art Classes this summer. Workshops will include Iris Folding, Tie Dye, and a collaborative art instillation project!

Laura: Without looking back, Laura left Chouinard Art College in Los Angeles to join Paul Foster and the Hog Farm and was soon immersed in what Wavy calls “the Life Show.”  From light shows to painted buses, from Woodstock to India, Laura was happy as a pig in a poke. Fast forward a few years, Laura again joined in at Camp Winnarainbow at the beloved “Art Grove.”  She recently retired from years of teaching art to high school students and now enjoys her studio time painting with other artists as well as bding a member of the Artist’s Co-Op of Mendocino. Making daily entries in her sketchbooks is a practice she started on the first trip to India.  Nowadays she posts many entries to Instagram and Facebook. She would love to share sketchbook ideas with campers this June, as well as to collaborate on a new installation project!

Leeann Lidz has been an art teacher at Camp Winnarainbow for 8 years and first learned to tie dye at Camp. She began  painting in 1972, and the creative process continues to bring balance, fulfillment and joy. For over 45 years she has used watercolors, acrylics, oil, media, mosaics, and found objects to create art. She's created murals and mosaics from California to Alaska, designed greeting cards, been nationally published, and won many awards. She served as a board member at the Occidental Center of the Arts, and chairwoman of the gallery committee for five years.

Dance

Each year we offer a different style of dance. Past workshops have included hip hop, belly dance, and West African. Whatever the offering, come ready to move your body in a safe space and have a ton of fun.

Stay tuned for this year's dance workshop...

Juggling

As our teachers say, "Everyone's welcome at the juggling cart!" Classes for beginners to advanced jugglers. Balls, rings, & clubs.

Improv Theater

Creative force Thessaly Lerner is back again to teach Improv, Acting, & Character Development!

Thessaly Lerner, the Ukulady, has been part of Camp Winnarainbow since 1979 or 80. Today she is a voiceover actress, TV/Film/Podcast writer, director, producer and comedic musical entertainer/songwriter known as the Ukulady.  Her Dreamworks TV cartoon, Astrid Strudelman, the Unicorn Whisperer, is watchable on Amazon Prime. She is constantly creating/pitching new content and promoting her universal-toast-everyone-can-get-onboard-with: To The Downfall of Evil!

Magic

JJ Crashbang is a multidisciplinary artist that has explored visual  and performing arts for the last 38 years. Over the years he has performed at various children festivals, did street theater in Europe from London to Vienna and has since combined clown, unicycle and  other nonsensical  displays to his performance. Along the way he has encountered prestidigitation and various forms of shenanigans  which he will share with willing participants. Come and learn one or more trick that will help you become a legend in your own mind and in potentially others.

Mask Making

Want to get plastered?  Your face, that is. At the Mask Grove, Vick and Sam will create a plaster mask of your face in less than an hour.  Additions in plaster can also be made to look like animals and creatures! From there you can come by the Mask Grove at your leisure to paint and decorate your mask. We would also love for you to join us in a simple and stress-free mask performance for the Big Show on Saturday night! Swing by the Mask Grove and sign up to make a mask.

Music

Sing, strum, jam, & collaborate!

Tipis

The Tipi Circle is the heart of Downtown Camp, and we invite you to stay in one of our 17 custom-made, certified fire resistant tipis with canvas floors. Comfortable canvas-covered sleeping mats are provided. You are also welcome to bring a cot or other mat.

Sleeping in a tipi is a special experience. Tipis are not the lodging of the Inidigenous People’s of CA, they are from the Plains tribes. The lodges have a story and meaning which we share on the Home page of our website.

There will be tipis marked for those who identify as men or women and others to be defined by those who inhabit them. Tipis have room for approximately 8 adults and are first come first serve.

Personal Tents

If you prefer your own space, you are welcome to bring a personal tent. You are welcome to use a camp mat in your tent, just please return it when you leave.

RVs & Trailers

If you have an RV or trailer you would like to live in while at Camp, we can find you a spot in our large, flat parking lot. Please note that we do not have any hookups for RVs & trailer.

Communication

We are happy to receive messages for you at the Office (please within reason because we are working hard to hold the Magic together!) by phone or email. So please feel free to leave our office phone number (707)984-6507 and email arainbow@mcn.org as emergency contacts. Otherwise, most carriers provide service somewhere between here and Laytonville so you can find service and check your messages on your cell!

Health & Safety

The health and safety of our campers is paramount at Camp Winnarainbow.

Health

We expect each camper to be responsible for their own health and well being, and to pack the medical supplies you’ll need. However, our Medical Dome has the basics, like bug spray, band aids, or arnica, should you forget something. If you feel you need medical attention, there is a clinic 10 minutes from Camp in Laytonville & a hospital in Willits. Please let our Medical Professional know if you have any questions.

All of our circus skills instructors are experienced, and employ appropriate safety techniques. However, some of the skills we teach at Camp such as stilt-walking, aerials and unicycling, do carry an increased risk of injury.

If there is a medical emergency, the Directors will assist you in accessing appropriate medical attention. All participants of Camp Winnarainbow must complete a medical form including consent to provide medical treatment.

Meds

If you have meds that need refrigeration, the medical dome has a refrigerator. We do not offer medical care or medication management at Camp.

Ticks

People occasionally have gotten tick bites at camp, so it is smart to monitor yourself in the mirror in the shower room. If you can’t reach the tick, please find the medical person for assistance with removal.

Safety

The Black Oak Ranch Campsite is subject to inspection each year. Our water, kitchen, food storage and toilet facilities are all required to be at or above health code standards. Our waterfront staff’s credentials meet or exceed State regulations for Organized Camps.

Emergency Preparedness

Staff are trained to keep all campers safe during any emergency. Camp has written emergency plans that are updated yearly. Camp Administrators attend local emergency preparedness meetings to coordinate plans with local authorities.

Packing

A huge part of the magic of Camp is spending the week outside! That being said, being outside is only fun when we’re prepared. As Wavy says, “there’s no bad weather, only bad dressing.” Check out our Packing List to set yourself up for success (click to expand).

Philosophy

For over 40 years, kids, teens and adults have run away to join our circus in beautiful Mendocino County. Our motto “Toward the Fun” draws on our philosophy of using FUN, in the form of performing arts, to change the world. At the heart of this is a desire to celebrate our Diversity and use everything we learn and create together to grow as Universal Human Beings.

The Show Show: Our performance philosophy emphasizes taking risks in a physically and emotionally safe environment. Campers choose from a wide range of activities and classes that encourage creativity, skills mastery, personal growth and physical development.

The Life Show: Through performance and creativity, we teach community building, responsibility for one’s own behavior, confidence, inner security and self-expression. We do everything possible to provide a safe, encouraging environment for us to explore and learn from and with each other.

Community is an important part of our values. Creating community is an art, one which the Hog Farm, Wavy Gravy, and Jahanara have practiced for many, many years (all over the world). Jahanara has taught us that everyone’s Story is important. We believe that we all grow by engaging in and consciously creating community together. At Camp Winnarainbow, we all work to BE MAGIC – foster Belonging, create Engagement, encourage Mastery, embrace the Adventurous, inspire Generosity, raise Interdependence, and grow Compassion.

Please read our Community Agreements before coming to Camp.
